For the first edition of ARENI Alter Ego, we hung out with Oyinkan to talk about what sets Nigerian fashion apart, her take on repeating outfits and designers she can’t get enough of.

What are three things that make a good outfit?
Firstly, you have to embody what you’re wearing. If you’re not convinced by your outfit, it shows. Then there’s your energy, what you wear can completely change how you carry yourself. And lastly, styling and making the look your own. Two people can be wearing the same outfit but it’s the attitude and personality that will differenciate the two.
Why is fashion in Nigeria standing out right now?
I think it’s the way they weave local stories into fashion. Designers are now building on traditional artistry by engaging the local economy and finding contemporary ways to reinterpret textiles. For instance, using aso oke in modern designs while still referencing the past. Nigerian fashion is bold, vibrant and expressive, which really reflects the Nigerian spirit. The rest of the world has plenty of brands doing mainly basics but I think Nigerian designers give you that and so much more.
What’s your favourite event to dress up for in Lagos?
My event, Lagos is Burning.
Who do you consider to be a Nigerian fashion icon?
Lisa Folawiyo. She has everything and wears everything. I think everyone wants her wardrobe.

What’s your take on repeating outfits?
Oh, I love it! I have so many wardrobe staples that I wear over and over again. Honestly, I think more people should repeat outfits. Buying something new for every occasion is just so wasteful. If your wardrobe isn’t ready for anything, then that’s a you problem. Of course it’s nice to add new pieces every now and then, but I’m definitely a big believer in repeating outfits

What makes a piece of clothing feel timeless?
Honestly, for me, it’s all in the tailoring. Sometimes there’s a dress that sits exactly where it should, and you can’t quite explain why it works but it just does. I think it always comes down to the cut and the fit.
Which Nigerian designer's entire collection would you wear?
Probably Kadiju. I wear so much Kadiju already. I don’t think there’s anything they’ve made that I don’t own.
